A

Advertisement — a posting to buy or sell cryptocurrency on a P2P market.
Altcoin — a term used to denote any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.
AMA session — stands for “Ask Me Anything,” it is a form of live interview in which the host is open to answer questions from the audience.

Backend development — the server-side development of software.

Blockchain — a distributed digital ledger that stores data of any kind.

Coin — ****a cryptocurrency that lives on its own independent blockchain. Should not be confused with a token.
Crypto + noun — all compound nouns with the first compound “crypto,” such as “crypto project,” “crypto industry,” etc., we write without a dash, as the compound nouns don’t require dashed spelling.
Crypto investor — a person that puts money into cryptocurrency assets or projects in order to make a profit.
Cross-chain (bridge, technology) — a tool that allows assets to be transferred between unrelated blockchains.

Hash rate — a measure of the amount of computational power a miner or network of miners uses to process transactions in a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism.

Liquidity pool — a digital stack of cryptocurrencies locked in a smart contract. This creates liquidity for quicker transactions.

Masterchain — the most significant layer of a multi-layered blockchain. Since it is a “-chain”, it deserves to be written in one word, the same as ‘blockchain’ is written.

NFT (Non-Fungible Token) — a type of digital asset that symbolizes physical objects such as art, music, in-game items, and films.

Open-source (adj.) — denotes software which original source code is freely available for redistribution and modification.

P

P2P/Peer-to-Peer — a transaction model in which each party can initiate contact without the involvement of an intermediary or central authority.

P2E/Play-to-Earn — a blockchain-based gaming sector in which gamers play for crypto token rewards.

Proof-of-Stake (PoS) — a consensus mechanism used to verify and track new transactions on the blockchain. Doesn’t require miners to compete.

Proof-of-Work (PoW) — a consensus mechanism used to verify and track new transactions on the blockchain. Miners compete to be the first to validate blocks of transactions by solving complex mathematical calculations in order to confirm a transaction.

Private key — a code that verifies a person’s ownership of a crypto wallet and allows access to the wallet.

Shardchain — a sub-blockchain of the main blockchain intended to reduce blockchain network congestion and increase transactions per second (TPS) rate. Since it is a “-chain”, it deserves to be written in one word, the same as ‘blockchain’ is written.

“Shardblock” would mean “shardchain block,” which it’s not. Instead, it is a block in the shardchain, so that’s why we write “shardchain” but “shard block.”

Smart contract — self-executing computer program that controls or documents actions specified in the terms of the contract. It’s a compound noun the same as ‘full moon’, ‘easy money’, etc., so there’s no need to hyphenate it. Regular capitalization — only at the beginning of a sentence.

Token — a digital unit of value created by blockchain-based businesses or projects on top of an existing blockchain.
